Exception, inasmuch as your Lordship states in the above quoted despatch, "that the salaries of certain subordinate members of our Public Works Department have already been dealt with."

I would humbly inform Your Lordship that my office in this Department was the same in 1875 as it is now in salary, nature of duties, and office. In 1875 Mr. Danby occupied it at a salary of $2760 per annum, viz:- $2400, and $360 for Quarters, the designations of office in that year being "Clerk of Works and Draughtsman." Mr. W. Leigh succeeded Mr. Danby in office at the corresponding salary, viz. $2760 per annum, and the title of office changed to Assistant Engineer. Mr. Best followed Mr. Leigh, and subsequently in 1886 myself, vide Secretary of State's Despatch No. 6 of 1886. The salary and office at present date corresponding with salary and office in 1875, viz:- $2760 per annum.

I would now humbly beg Your Lordship's reconsideration, and that my office may be included in the list for the increase of 35 per cent, my appointment dates back some years before the late reorganisation of my Department, the effect of which has been so far to place me on a lower footing, and lower grade, than the newly appointed officers.

My Memorial addressed to Your Lordship on the 30th August 1890, will, I trust, be considered with this application.

I have the honour to be Your Lordship's most obedient Servant,

Chas. Mallet.

Assistant Engineer
